Women's Self-Defense Instructors

Ed Byrne
Certified Instructor
Kilkenny, Ireland

Ed Byrne is a well-rounded martial artist  who brings plenty real-world experience to his classes.

As Assistant Chief Officer and instructor at the Midlands Prison, he teaches restraint and control, riot control and defensive tactics to other officers.   His consulting company, Quest Training Limited, specializes in the prevention, control & management of workplace violence and crime.

Ed Byrne, women's self-defense instructor in the Kilkenny, Ireland area."My philosophy is that every individual has the right to go about their lives in safety and peace," he says. "Unfortunately we live in a violent and unsafe world where minding your own business is no guarantee of moving safely through life. Certain sections and subcultures of our society work at denying this right to decent living people and women are sometimes seen as being more vulnerable than men."

Ed teaches self-defense to women as a way to give back something positive from the experiences he has had in the prison service.

"My experiences in the 18 years I have spent in the prison system has shown me how unprepared most people are to deal with hardened violent criminals, says Ed. "As a husband and father I believe that all women regardless of age should be educated to the risks to their safety and have at their disposal a range of strategies to deal with any situation."

Ed comes well-equipped to deal with various self-defense strategies with a background in judo, jiu-jitsu, boxing and Krav Maga.

He believes education is a priority to disseminate the proper information and skills to as many women as possible.

"Recognition of the problem is key," he says. "Realize that the threat exists, rather than having the ostrich's head-in-the-sand syndrome."

What do you mean "Fight like a Girl"?

"In a stranger-rape situation, if he allows you to see his face, you get his name, or you can somehow otherwise identify your attacker, and he knows it, it’s all the more important to get away from him, even if he has a knife and you are risking injury.  Because unless he’s quite inexperienced, he’s likely to kill you to leave no witnesses."

 John Douglas, legendary FBI profiler

Program a Long Time Coming

"The concept of enlightening women to 'fight like girls' is a long time coming. We should have been doing this years ago.  The female body is built differently and can be used effectively against a male attacker if trained properly.  Defend University and the Rape Escape program have proven again and again that the Fight Like a Girl program is successful, easy to learn and easy to deliver."

Dave Scorza
