Women's Self-Defense Instructors

Terry Donaghue
Certified Instructor
Dublin, Ireland

Terry is a Sergeant with the Garda Siochana, Ireland's national police service.  His profession has him based in one of the roughest sections of Dublin.

Because of his daily work, Terry has a keen interest in self-defense and is a student of Aikido and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  He also is also a first aid instructor and does community work with the Order of Malta Ambulance Corps.

When teaching women's self-defense, he feels that lack of physical size should not force women to be victims.

"Good technique should combat brute strength," he says.  "Remember, it is not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog".

Terry says women need to learn how to recognize and avoid the situations that lead to violence and how to deal with these situations before during and after a violent confrontation.

"I became a Rape Escape instructor because I had seen the techniques used and my wife had done Level One and Two," he says.  "I think they are the most practical techniques I have seen for women's self defense. Simple and effective. I knew I wanted to help as many women as possible to learn these techniques.

What do you mean "Fight like a Girl"?

"In a stranger-rape situation, if he allows you to see his face, you get his name, or you can somehow otherwise identify your attacker, and he knows it, it’s all the more important to get away from him, even if he has a knife and you are risking injury.  Because unless he’s quite inexperienced, he’s likely to kill you to leave no witnesses."

 John Douglas, legendary FBI profiler

Program a Long Time Coming

"The concept of enlightening women to 'fight like girls' is a long time coming. We should have been doing this years ago.  The female body is built differently and can be used effectively against a male attacker if trained properly.  Defend University and the Rape Escape program have proven again and again that the Fight Like a Girl program is successful, easy to learn and easy to deliver."

Dave Scorza
