Women's Self-Defense Instructors
Senior Instructor Shannon is a fitness instructor and a martial arts instructor specializing in working with women and kids. She does
women's advocacy work through psychiatric and community health nursing. "The mental and physical aspects of training in self-defense have a strong impact on personal confidence and ability. Women need this knowledge and a plan on how to essentially let go and fight back. This is not a natural process for most women. I want to break down the wall of hesitation, the fear of the unknown that can prevent a woman from fighting back. In any scenario, where it is violent or not, a woman has the innate ability to defend herself strongly. She just needs to know how to tap into that strength. It should allow a woman to experience the aggression of a threat against her. And most importantly, how to mentally and physically react to the aggression, fight back and survive." "In a stranger-rape situation, if he allows you to see his face, you get his name, or you can somehow otherwise identify your attacker, and he knows it, it’s all the more important to get away from him, even if he has a knife and you are risking injury. Because unless he’s quite inexperienced, he’s likely to kill you to leave no witnesses." Program a Long Time Coming "The concept of enlightening women to 'fight like girls' is a long time coming. We should have been doing this years ago. The female body is built differently and can be used effectively against a male attacker if trained properly. Defend University and the Rape Escape program have proven again and again that the Fight Like a Girl program is successful, easy to learn and easy to deliver."
