Women's Self-Defense Instructors
Senior Instructor Maire Dempsey was prompted to become a
women's self-defense instructor "I want to help women from becoming victims. I believe that sharing the knowledge and skills to protect yourself helps women gain confidence and increases their self-esteem." Maire (pronounced "Mary") is an attorney by trade who volunteers her legal skills at Legal Assistance of Metropolitan Chicago, providing free legal services to victims of domestic violence to assist in protecting them and their children. "I believe women have a right to feel safe wherever they go. It is important that they have the confidence and ability to protect themselves in any situation." "In a stranger-rape situation, if he allows you to see his face, you get his name, or you can somehow otherwise identify your attacker, and he knows it, it’s all the more important to get away from him, even if he has a knife and you are risking injury. Because unless he’s quite inexperienced, he’s likely to kill you to leave no witnesses." Program a Long Time Coming "The concept of enlightening women to 'fight like girls' is a long time coming. We should have been doing this years ago. The female body is built differently and can be used effectively against a male attacker if trained properly. Defend University and the Rape Escape program have proven again and again that the Fight Like a Girl program is successful, easy to learn and easy to deliver."
