Women's Self-Defense Instructors

Michael Mayles
Certified Instructor
Bristol, UK

Michael brings an impressive depth and breadth of experience to the instructor network.

He was formerly with Royal Air Force Police and served as a police constable with the Royal Ulster Constabulary.

During the early seventies in Northern Ireland he trained regularly in Aikido plus elements of Tai Chi and Ju-Jitsu, with a particular eye toward using them in a military and police context.

"I first trained as an instructor with the National Federation for Personal Safety (UK based) in the affectionately named 'Bash and Dash' courses in 1998. These were designed with the involvement of the Metropolitan Police in London and were intended to not only teach self defense techniques, but also to inform what can and cannot be done with reference to the law. The physiological effects of confrontation and finally to try and raise the students level of awareness (avoiding paranoia) and the importance of avoidance. I did various training sessions with the NFPS culminating in becoming an instructor in Physical Intervention.

In Brazil he is involved with an organization called SOTAI, which teaches personal safety and defense and does part-time community work for victim support in domestic violence and anti-stalking.

"I am a strong believer in dynamic, reality-based training that tackles the subject from a woman’s viewpoint. Any course needs to address not only the breakaway techniques, but also the essential aspects of awareness and avoidance. It needs to be serious, but fun too, aimed at producing a sensible level of confidence with appropriate skills that combined with an appreciation of the reality of violence are useable in everyday life, without it dominating that life. Train to Win, Not to Lose.

"When I first looked into the Rape Escape program, I already have some experience in teaching women. However, the subject of rape was always there and touched upon, but, it was only on discovering your work in this field that I realized that it really was a subject on its own. I scoured your website and was impressed by the common sense attitude and well thought out advice I found. I unfortunately have seen the devastating effect rape has on a woman and I believe that Rape Escape fills an important gap."

What do you mean "Fight like a Girl"?

"In a stranger-rape situation, if he allows you to see his face, you get his name, or you can somehow otherwise identify your attacker, and he knows it, it’s all the more important to get away from him, even if he has a knife and you are risking injury.  Because unless he’s quite inexperienced, he’s likely to kill you to leave no witnesses."

 John Douglas, legendary FBI profiler

Program a Long Time Coming

"The concept of enlightening women to 'fight like girls' is a long time coming. We should have been doing this years ago.  The female body is built differently and can be used effectively against a male attacker if trained properly.  Defend University and the Rape Escape program have proven again and again that the Fight Like a Girl program is successful, easy to learn and easy to deliver."

Dave Scorza
