Women's Self-Defense Instructors

Donna McCarron
Certified Instructor
Cranbury, New Jersey

Donna is one of the hardest working Rape Escape instructors around.  A black belt in Tae Kwon Do, she is a tireless advocate for women.

She is involved in the Plainsboro Township Domestic Violence Response Team, Mercer County’s Eastern Regional Domestic Violence Response team, Mercer County Sexual Assault Response Team and was formerly a Somerset County FoodDonna McCarron, women's self-defense instructor Shopper for the SafeHouse.

"I’ve trained on and off in the martial arts since 1993 and I  never  felt comfortable with my ability to defend myself against a violent attack until I learned Rape Escape.  Karate was developed by men, for men and most karate schools don’t address the serious topic of sexual assault.  Sexual assault happens and it happens everywhere not just in bad areas and major cities."

"I wanted to bring a self-defense class to my DVRT team members, but I couldn’t find anyone who had the time to bring a class to us. I was amazed that of all the martial art schools in NJ, I couldn’t find one instructor to teach a women's self-defense class.  One of my team members said to me, 'why don’t you teach the class?'  Just because I had my black belt didn’t make me an expert on women’s self-defense.  I knew nothing and I had absolutely no confidence in my ability as a martial artist to defend myself from a violent attack.  So what could I teach them?  I continued to search the web for an instructor.  I came across rapeescape.com and there was an instructors certification course in 3 weeks in Westchester County, NY.  There are no coincidences. What did I have to lose?  I went to the class and I loved every minute of it.  Finally, someone was paying attention.  The techniques were simple, effective and most importantly, I could remember them.  At the beginning of the class it’s quiet, but by the end of the Donna McCarron working on technique at the 2005 Dublin instructors course.class women are fighting back and are exhilarated.   Being a victim/survivor advocate has opened my eyes to the reality of sexual assault.  As a society, we still have a long, long way to go when it comes to violence against women.  I am happy to know that, although I cannot stop sexual assault, I can be a part of helping women fight back spiritually, mentally and physically.  I can make a difference.

"I would like to especially thank Tom Bryan of Tom Bryan Karate for giving me the opportunity to teach my class at his school and for having confidence in me. And thank you to my Rape Escape team Ramona, Jose & Rob.  We can be reached by anyone interested in setting up a class in New Jersey or within the general area.

What do you mean "Fight like a Girl"?

"In a stranger-rape situation, if he allows you to see his face, you get his name, or you can somehow otherwise identify your attacker, and he knows it, it’s all the more important to get away from him, even if he has a knife and you are risking injury.  Because unless he’s quite inexperienced, he’s likely to kill you to leave no witnesses."

 John Douglas, legendary FBI profiler

Program a Long Time Coming

"The concept of enlightening women to 'fight like girls' is a long time coming. We should have been doing this years ago.  The female body is built differently and can be used effectively against a male attacker if trained properly.  Defend University and the Rape Escape program have proven again and again that the Fight Like a Girl program is successful, easy to learn and easy to deliver."
