Women's Self-Defense Instructors

Robert E. Trotter
Certified Instructor
Highland Park, IL

Bob is a long-time martial artist with experience in Karate, Shidokan kickboxing, Western boxing, Jeet Kune Do, Wing Chun kung fu and Tae Kwon Do.  He currently runs a personal training business called "Street Smart", teaching a blend of the best concepts and techniques from the many martial arts he has studied.

"Violence is a social menace and can be a deadly crime.  It can happen anywhere at anytime and within any economic class.  It does not discriminate against color race or religion.  Women of all walks of life need to be educated in functional techniques to help raise their awareness, and to prevent, reduce and survive a violent encounter.  It is my belief, that education is the key that drives the vehicle to assist in this cause.

"When a woman signs up for a self-defense class, the instructor's goal should be to have that woman walk out of class confident that with the skills that she acquired, she could face a confrontation and come out victorious.

"As an instructor, first and foremost on my agenda is to provide realistic, functional, quality self-defense to women and to work unfailingly to empower them with the right tools to defend against the violence so rampant in our society.

"Through the limited experience I have had and what I have seen and read, most self-defense courses for women do not live up to their intended objective.  They usually are taught by men who teach these women “how to fight like men”.  Although it is a noble idea to want to help woman combat violence, I believe it is a detriment to do it in an incorrect fashion.

"When I came across the rape escape web site, I was thoroughly impressed with what I had read.  In my opinion, as the web site explains, the most logical choice in teaching women to survive a REAL LIFE encounter is to first teach them how to respond to the worst case scenario.  Teaching women what to do when they are already in a vulnerable position and working backwards is an inventive and logical approach to real world defense against violence.  I’m looking forward to spreading the word and arming women with the applicable tools to defend themselves when they need it most."

What do you mean "Fight like a Girl"?

"In a stranger-rape situation, if he allows you to see his face, you get his name, or you can somehow otherwise identify your attacker, and he knows it, it’s all the more important to get away from him, even if he has a knife and you are risking injury.  Because unless he’s quite inexperienced, he’s likely to kill you to leave no witnesses."

 John Douglas, legendary FBI profiler

Program a Long Time Coming

"The concept of enlightening women to 'fight like girls' is a long time coming. We should have been doing this years ago.  The female body is built differently and can be used effectively against a male attacker if trained properly.  Defend University and the Rape Escape program have proven again and again that the Fight Like a Girl program is successful, easy to learn and easy to deliver."

Dave Scorza
