Women's Self-Defense Instructors
Ken Utterback
Laguna Hills, Calif.
Instructor 2:
Fight Like a Girl
Girls on Guard
"Knowledge is power when it comes to protecting yourself," says Ken.
"Every woman should have the chance, or opportunity to obtain the knowledge and
support that she needs to feel safe in today’s society."
Ken
is an accomplished martial artist and an experienced instructor. He has
been been studying martial arts for about 25 years and currently holds the rank
of 3rd Dan in Shaolin Kempo. He has also studied Shaolin Kempo for 9 years
with additional study in Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, BaGua, Filipino Arnis, Muay Thai
and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
"After having two little girls added to our family, I realized that I had a
deeper level of justice than I had ever thought. I found that I wanted to do
anything I could to protect them and to keep my family safe. Having an
opportunity to own and run a martial arts studio has become rather eye opening.
I have further realized that my students have become like an extended family and
that I wanted to be able to provide them with the same type of knowledge that
they could use to protect themselves. Having this knowledge allows me the
opportunity to show what a positive role model is within our community. This is
one way that I feel that I can contribute and give back to society."

What do you mean "Fight like a Girl"?
"In
a stranger-rape situation, if he allows you to see his face, you get his
name, or you can somehow otherwise identify your attacker, and he knows
it, it’s all the more important to get away from him, even if he has a
knife and you are risking injury. Because
unless he’s quite inexperienced, he’s likely to kill you to leave no
witnesses."
John Douglas, legendary FBI profiler
Program a Long Time Coming
"The concept of enlightening
women to 'fight like girls' is a long time coming. We should have been doing
this years ago. The female body is built differently and can be used
effectively against a male attacker if trained properly.
Defend University and the Rape Escape
program have proven again and again that the Fight
Like a Girl program is successful, easy to learn and easy to deliver."
