Women's Self-Defense Instructors

Terra Wise
Certified Instructor
Mill Valley, California

Terra is an integral teacher-healer in Northern California offering unbiased support for all women in an interconnected theme of empowerment, inner development and personal/transpersonal insight.  She offers self-defense training, yogachi, dream work and compassionate healing.

She is also a California state-certified Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor and is involved with the Community Violence Solutions Crisis line.

"It is remarkably empowering for a woman to discover that she can learn something new, more than she might have ever thought she was capable of. To learn confidence, to know her boundaries, to develop prevention strategies, heighten awareness, and trust what she knows.

"All my work the past 20 years is focused on women's integral health-- self-defense is another key to that overall balance  I also teach yoga and movement, and include self-defense. I already have blended qigong and some martial arts energetic into my classes and private work.  And to help women and teens become more conscious, alert, confidant, capable.

"Education is the key in eliminating violence against women. Fear triggers many people, from there comes generalizations, prejudice, acting out, verbal abuse, discrimination. To teach appreciation and compassion. For women and men to become informed. For women to learn their rights and develop their autonomous selves.  To know it is ok to say no. To learn boundaries.  For young boys to be taught by their fathers and grandfathers to respect and honor girls and women.  I think the level of violence that is prevalent and available might be making some men numb and insensitive.

" Women need to learn balance, to find what is repressed and integrate all parts of themselves, including the strong defender, self protector part.  Teaching this work can give women options, and chances they might not otherwise have."

What do you mean "Fight like a Girl"?

"In a stranger-rape situation, if he allows you to see his face, you get his name, or you can somehow otherwise identify your attacker, and he knows it, it’s all the more important to get away from him, even if he has a knife and you are risking injury.  Because unless he’s quite inexperienced, he’s likely to kill you to leave no witnesses."

 John Douglas, legendary FBI profiler

Program a Long Time Coming

"The concept of enlightening women to 'fight like girls' is a long time coming. We should have been doing this years ago.  The female body is built differently and can be used effectively against a male attacker if trained properly.  Defend University and the Rape Escape program have proven again and again that the Fight Like a Girl program is successful, easy to learn and easy to deliver."

Dave Scorza
